Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav meets family of victim in Agra Police fake encounter case

The family members of Akash Gurjar, who was allegedly killed in a fake encounter by the Agra Police of Uttar Pradesh in September 2022, met with Samajwadi Party National President and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on April 7, 2023. Akash Gurjar's mother Mamta Devi, his brother Anshu Gurjar, and his maternal uncle Bhupendra were present at the meeting.

During the meeting, the victim's relatives told Mr. Yadav that Akash Gurjar was preparing to join the army's Agniveer recruitment after completing his 12th grade studies. He had left for Agra on September 26, 2022, from his home in Morena, Madhya Pradesh. The Agra Police allegedly caught him the next morning and shot him three times, claiming he was involved in criminal activities. Akash Gurjar later died from his injuries after 48 days of treatment.

On March 21, 2023, the district court of Agra ordered the registration of a murder case against the police and deemed the encounter as fake. In response, Mr. Yadav assured the family members of all possible help and provided them with financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh on behalf of the party.

Mr. Yadav also demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government provide a compensation of Rs. 1 crore to the family members of Akash Gurjar and offer a job to a family member. He criticized the BJP government, accusing the police of crossing the limit of corruption and carrying out fake encounters. Uttar Pradesh police, he claimed, is responsible for the highest number of fake encounters in the country. A delegation of the Samajwadi Party will visit Police Station Sarai Chhola and Gadaura village of the victim in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.
